JOEL CASTELLANOS
ONE OF THE FIRST VOLUNTEERS
Recently we heard from Joel,  first mentioned in a Historical Photo/Essay from 1969, that said
(about half-way through that photo/essay):
 August 30, 1969:
"JOEL CASTELLANOS, prospective missionary from Esquintla sent by the LDS Mission to work for a few months to buy clothes and transportation to his mission.  Learned he had been unceremoniously turned down by others...
......which I never thought of.  He becomes a great companion."

Other mentions of Joel continued for a couple of months, and then he left on his mission......and now 48 years later, he's back and sent the following composition he made:

Joel is also included  in the Historical Review,  beginning with item #36.:

Thanks, JOEL, welcome Home!

PROJECT UPDATE
At Chuluc, Garbage Dump Community,
 Mariita Exercising &
School Projects at Valparaiso & Najquitob:
****************
MOTHER'S DAY AT
"Ariel & Ines Andersen"  Chuluc Village School

Special gratitude for Ariel & Ines Andersen was expressed by Mario who reviewed some their incredible history of generosity, being those who organized the Foundation, were the primary donors for their last 14 years--during which years they managed the Foundation as non-paid volunteers, always stating the  words of the Lord,

"Verily I way, men should be anxiously engaged in a good cause, and do many things of their own free will, and bring to pass much righteousness; -- But he that doeth not anything until he is commanded and receiveth a commandment with doubtful heart, and keepeth it with slothfulness, the same is damned."
D&C 58:26-28

Thanks to all those whose contributions helped make this celebration possible, especially for those of us Andersen's who help with this activity every year to remember our parents/grandparents, Ariel & Ines Andersen, founders & primary donors to the Foundation

THE GARBAGE DUMP COMMUNITY PROJECT
CELEBRATION TO PRESENT THE RESULTS
--12 MONTHS IN THE MAKING--
OF THE MASTER'S THESIS STUDY BY Aura Andersen  & HER COMPANION, Yusby Gonzalez

This activity was in part financed by the Guatemalan Foundation,  for the Directors of the Esperanza Community Association, and the Coordinator & Legal Representative, plus the Committee of Nutritional Security, as well as a few special dignitaries invited to the event.

We begin this report with a picture of the headquarters of the project, and most of the mothers who  were worked with during the project and will be  the beneficiaries of the project along with  their families.

We begin with the program sent to all those invited to the special presentation by Aura and Yusby, Master's Degree candidates at
the University of Rafael Landivar.

The welcome is given by the Director of the Community Association, Juan Pablo.    Aura is seen up front on the left, and Yusby Gonzalez on the right.

Here we see Father Sergio Godoy Pelaez, Catholic Priest, who is founder of the project and the Legal Director.  I believe he is from Spain from where most of the support for the project comes.

Aura making her PowerPoint presentation to the group of dignitaries.....followed by...

Yusby Gonzalez, each having specialized in different aspects of the Nutritional Study for the Community.

Aura presenting the "Diplomas" of thanks to some of the key women of the community .....

...who gave specific help during the year long project.
Aura and Yusby giving a Diploma to Father Godoy Pelaez who has  been the driving force behind this project for the 10 years of its functioning to help the people of the community.

Rosario, Vice President of the Community Association, responsible specifically for "Atention to Victims," receives her diploma of gratitude.

Aura, and  Yusby presenting a Certificate of Gratitude to Juan Pablo,

Another diploma of gratitude to Herbert, member of the Directors of the Association.

Last of all a close-up of many of the mothers involved who will be blessed by this effort to improve the nutrition of the people of the community.

NOW TO VALPARAISO FOR A FEW VIEWS
OF MARIITA WHO WE HELPED WITH A NEEDED EXERCISE APPARATUS
You might remember she is the little 4 year old on the left in the following picture which was part of a
July 1971 ENSIGN (LDS publication) article
"The Awakening of Guatemala" -- "El Despertar de Guatemala"
Para espanol, apacha los siguiente:  LIAHONA Nov. 1971

We recently had sufficient funds to get for her an exercise apparatus, which she is most grateful for as it is helping her a great deal in her therapy needed by having had a stroke.

NEEDED KITCHEN/STORAGE FACILITIES
for the
NAJQUITOB & VALPARAISO/RIO FRIO SCHOOLS
Najquitob is the village that in 1968 was 2 miles up a slippery trail to the south of Valparaiso, where a few children from Valparaiso sporadically attended the crude school--a well used picture of the school seen below.
No girls had ever attended.

That is when our relationship began,  eventually helping them build their first formal school, that a few years later was added on to, again, and again, along with in this century helping with the first flush toilets, and a small kitchen.

There are now 450 students there and we are helping them expand their kitchen, build storage facilities, and get improved utensils and equipment.

Most of the work at Najquitob is finished as we see above, but now we need to....
....focus on expanding and improving the facility at The Valparaiso/Rio Frio School.
The development of this school can be seen from the beginning, with Julie's little group of 6 barefoot Indian children.  You can see the 48 year development in the Success Stories listed on the right side on the Home Page, but just a little follows:
The portion on the left built on property I donated, with materials the Foundation provided, and labor provided by the people, and inaugurated with Army protection against guerrillas in 1982.  Then added to on the right, then.....

.......down below, and through Federico's efforts, adding in the new century a JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL now with 95 students from 7 surrounding villages.

Then in 2012 with the passing of Julie, my oldest daughter, and the 1st teacher, we had a project to build a Kindergarten classroom that bears her name, and.....

...... improved some the kitchen seen below.

We have also helped them, in the new century build new sanitary facilities, stairways from the top level down to the level along the river, etc.
But the population has grown now to around a total of 480 students, morning and afternoon, and  there is need of expansion again, of the kitchen.

So, maybe as our last project at Valparaiso after 50 years of unceasing effort, we need at least $1,000 to complete the project at the
Valparaiso/Rio Frio School.
